The currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colon, with one Colon equalling 100 centimos. Notes come in denominations of ¢10,000, 5,000, 2,000, 1,000 and 500. Coins are in denominations of ¢100, 50, 25, 20, 10 and 5. US Dollars are widely accepted. Money can be exchanged easily at banks, hotels and bureau de changes, though only US Dollars tend to be exchanged. Traveller’s cheques are accepted, though to avoid additional conversion charges they should be in US Dollars.ATMs are available, and major international credit and debit cards are accepted. Business: General banking hours in most areas are from 0800 to 1500 Mondays to Fridays. Shopping hours are generally from 0900 to 1800, Mondays to Sundays. Costa Rican customs are generally in the traditional frame of things, with a handshake and politeness being the basis of any good relationship, and suits are to be expected of formal meetings, prohibitive humidity or not. Service charges are added to bills most of the time, and taxi drivers are not usually tipped. Service staff in hotels, restaurants and the like do expect tips.
