Roads in Costa Rica are generally of a decent standard in and around San Jose, but quality of surfaces can drop quite sharply outside of the city, with many potholes around. Buses run frequently and offer cheap, fairly comfortable transport across long distances – local bus services are obviously cheaper still, but less comfortable. There are a number of taxi services available, with minivans proving one of the most popular methods for visitors. Rail services in the country are in the slow process of being re-introduced, but as of now they are primarily for business or tourist trips, not getting around. Internal flights are available to a number of destinations within Costa Rica, and flights can prove ideal for those with less time than money. A number of passenger boats are available, but the vast majority are for touristic purposes. Those that can be used for travel tend to be cheap though.
